Allegation of torturing wife for dowry, husband arrested

Police arrested Parvez Alam Faisal on the charge of torturing his wife Urmi Akhter without getting the demanded dowry money. He was arrested on Tuesday night. He was sent to jail by the court on Wednesday (September 15) afternoon. The arrested Parvez is the son of Nurur Afsar of North Lamchi village of Kabirhat Upazila in Noakhali.

Thomas Barua, OC of Kabibarhat police station confirmed the truth and said that Parvez Alam Faisal married Urmi (18) daughter of Chhaydal Haque of the same village on June 15 with a dowry of five lakh taka. At the time of marriage, Urmi's father gave her husband a gold ornament worth 50 thousand rupees. Since marriage till now he has not taken his wife to his house. A few days after the wedding, Faisal demanded 2 lakh rupees from Urmi saying that he was going abroad. As his father is speech-impaired and poor, he expresses his inability to pay. There has been a dispute in the area about this.

The OC also said that Faisal, who was not able to get the money, went to his father's house and beat Urmi at the instigation of his brother Mizanur Rahman on Monday night. In this incident, on Tuesday afternoon, the victim filed a case against her husband Faisal and her brother Mizanur Rahman under the Prevention of Torture against Women and Children Act. Husband Faisal was arrested that night. He was sent to jail by the court this afternoon. Another accused Mizan is absconding. He said that efforts to arrest him are continuing.
