Taliban cut off hands of 4 people for theft

Nine people have been publicly flogged in Kandahar, Afghanistan, for robbery and homosexuality, while four people have reportedly had their hands cut off in public for theft.

Afghanistan's Supreme Court said in a statement that nine people had been sentenced for robbery and homosexuality. Afghanistan's Tolo News tweeted the Supreme Court statement.

Local authorities and Kandahar residents were present at the stadium during the flogging. Haji Zayed, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the culprits were given between 35 and 39 lashes.

Shabnam Nasimi, a British-Afghan socio-political activist, said the Taliban reportedly cut off the hands of four people yesterday in front of spectators at a football stadium in Kandahar for allegedly stealing. People are being flogged, amputations and executed without justice and due process in Afghanistan, which is a violation of human rights.

UN experts have expressed deep concern over the use of public floggings and executions in Afghanistan. In a statement, the UN experts said that since November 18, 2022, Taliban authorities have reportedly flogged more than 100 people in several provinces of Afghanistan.
