The results of the seventh phase of the union council elections left the Awami League and independent candidates in a tight position. In the votes held yesterday, out of 58 union councils, the BNP candidate was unofficially elected chairman in 20.
On the other hand, independents have been elected chairmen in 35. Most of the independent candidates are rebel candidates of the Awami League. In addition, candidates from other political parties have won in the remaining 12.
Earlier, continuous voting was held in 136 union parishads from 8 am to 4 pm. Two people lost their lives in two union parishads in Satkania upazila of Chittagong due to election violence. The results were announced by the concerned returning officers after counting the votes at night. News sent by the bureau and representatives-
Rangamati: Voting was conducted peacefully in 17 UPs in three upazilas of Rangamati Hill District. Of these, 8 were in Baghaichhari Upazila, 7 in Longadu Upazila and 2 in Jurachhari Upazila.
Among the privately elected chairmen in these UPs, 4 were from the Awami League, 4 from Awami League rebels, 8 from independents, and 1 from the BNP independent.
The elected chairmen are Olive Chakma (AL) in Sadar Union of Baghaichhari Upazila, Jasmine Chakma alias Dhaneshwar (Independent) in Rupakari Union, Apan Chakma (Independent) in Marishya Union, Mujibur Rahman (AL rebel) in Amtoli Union, Biltu Chakma (Independent) in Khedarmara Union, Bhupati Ranjan Chakma (Independent) in Sarwatoli Union, Gyan Jyoti Chakma (Independent) in Bangaltoli Union and Atulal Chakma (Independent) in Sajek Union, Kamal Hossain Kamal (AL rebel) in Mainimukh Union of Longadu Upazila, Md. Shafiqul Islam (AL), Kalapakujja Md. Abdul Barek Dewan (BNP Independent) in Bhasainadam Union, Md. Hazrat Ali (AL rebel) in Bagachatar Union, Md. Abul Bashar (AL), Ajay Chakma (AL) in Atarkachhara Union and Kulin Mitra Chakma Adu (AL rebel) in Longadu Union and Emon Chakma (Independent) in Sadar Union of Jurachhari Upazila and Santosh Bikash Chakma (Independent) in Banyogichara Union. Among them, Olive Chakma (AL) and Jasmine Chakma alias Dhaneshwar (Independent) were elected without a vote.
Thakurgaon: Awami League candidate Nobel Kumar Singha has been elected in the Senua Union Parishad election of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila by getting 1,958 votes.
Debidwar (Comilla): Voting was held in 2 UPs in Debidwar, Comilla using EVMs. In these two UPs, Md. Humayun Kabir (Nauka) in Gunaighar Dakshin Union and Nurul Islam (Nauka) in Barkamta Union were declared winners by private parties.
Bhuiyanpur (Tangail): Finally, Awami League candidate Rafiqul Islam Rafiq has become the chairman of Akalu Government Primary School in Aloya Union of Bhuiyanpur Upazila of Tangail with a margin of 655 votes in the results of the suspended center.
Zakiganj (Sylhet): Voting was held on Monday at the Ganipur polling station of Sultanpur UP in Zakiganj, Sylhet. Awami League rebel candidate and current chairman Rafiqul Islam received 593 votes. He was elected chairman privately with 4,408 votes in 9 wards.
Puthia (Rajshahi): Voting has ended at a suspended center in Baneshwar Union in Puthia, Rajshahi. Independent candidate (Anars) Abdur Razzak Dulal has been unofficially elected chairman after getting a total of 12,726 votes.
Chuadanga: Awami League candidate Md. Shukur Ali has been elected chairman in the Titudah UP election of Sadar Upazila in Chuadanga. He received 5,103 votes under the boat symbol.
Gouripur (Mymensingh): Boat symbol candidate Md. Joynal Abedin has won the chairmanship for the fourth time in Sidhla Union of Gouripur Upazila of Mymensingh. Elections were held in two suspended centers on Monday. Md. Joynal Abedin received 2610 votes. The results show that Md. Joynal Abedin of the boat symbol was elected privately by getting 5346 votes.
Tanore (Rajshahi): Independent candidate BNP leader Mozammel Haque has been elected as the chairman of Tanore in Rajshahi, defeating Awami League-backed chairman candidate Saidur Rahman Sarkar Said. He received 95 more votes than the nearest candidate.
Rangpur: Awami League rebel Asaduzzaman in Khoragach Union No. 1 of Mithapukur Upazila, independent candidate Abu Farhad Patu in Ranipukur Union No. 2, Jamaat's Mahbubar Rahman Mahbub in Pairaband Union No. 3, Jamaat's Abdullah Al Mamun in Bhangni Union No. 4, Jamaat's Maulana Abul Hasnat Ratan in Balarhat Union No. 5, Jamaat's Joynal Abedin Master in Kafrikhal Union No. 6, Awami League rebel Idris Ali in Latibpur Union No. 7, Awami League rebel Rezaul Kabir Tutul in Chengmari Union No. 8, Awami League rebel Mokchedul Alam Sarkar Mukul in Moenpur Union No. 9, Jamaat's Md. Shahjahan Mia, BNP's Tariqul Islam Sarkar Swapan in Barabala Union No. 11, Awami League's Atiar Rahman in Milanpur Union No. 12, BNP's Harun Or Rashid Talukder in Shalt Gopalpur Union No. 13, Awami League's Saidur Rahman Talukder in Durgapur Union No. 14, Awami League's Abdul Matin in Baro Horatpur Union No. 15, Jamaat's Maulana Shafiqul Islam in Union No. 16, and Jamaat's Shafiqul Islam in Imadpur Union No. 17 were elected.
