Man kills wife and child in revenge for rape and marriage

Police arrested rapist Shahin Munshi on July 3 last year on charges of rape in Hatempur village of Patharghata police station in Barguna. After three months in prison, the court granted him bail on the condition that he marry the rape victim.

The day after Shaheen Munshi got bail, Sumaiya Akhter got married. Shaheen Munshi is a jailer by profession. Sumaiya Akhter and her 9-month-old child had been missing since July 1. On July 2, Sumaiya's father Ripon Badsha became suspicious after seeing soft soil near the house. Later, with the help of locals, he dug up the soil and recovered the bodies of his daughter and granddaughter. Shaheen Munshi had been absconding since the incident.

On Monday (July 12) night, a special team of Dhaka's CID raided the Bandar Thana area of Chittagong and arrested Shaheen Munshi. After the arrest, Shaheen Munshi said that after raping her and marrying her, he was in a state of family turmoil. He often argued with his wife about this. As a result, he strangled his wife to death by suffocating her with a nylon rope from a fishing net. After the murder, he dug the ground next to the house and buried the body. When he came home, he saw his 9-month-old daughter crying. Then he took her in his arms and went to the canal next to the house. The child was killed by drowning her in the canal water. Then he buried the daughter along with his wife.

Special Superintendent of Police Mukta Dhar narrated the tragic incident of the murder of a mother and child at a press conference at the CID office in Malibagh on Tuesday (July 13). Additional Superintendent of Police Khairul Amin, Additional Superintendent of Police Azad Rahman and Assistant Superintendent of Police Mostafizur Rahman Rifat were also present at the press conference.

CID Special Police Superintendent Mukta Dhar said that on July 3 last year, a rape case was filed against Shaheen Munshi at Patharghata Police Station. He was arrested in that case and imprisoned for 3 months. Later, mediation took place between the accused and the family of the rape victim. When the accused agreed to marry the woman, the plaintiff did not oppose bail in the court. Later, he got out of jail and married Sumaiya Akhter. Three months after the marriage, a baby girl was born to them. In the meantime, Shaheen Munshi lost his job due to the Corona lockdown. He was earning a living by working as a daily wage laborer. On June 30, Shaheen went to the village with his wife and child to invite his in-laws to the house. After returning home on July 1, he had an argument with his wife. At one point, he killed his wife by tying a nylon rope around her neck.

Later, he dug up the body and buried it in the ground next to the house. At that time, Shaheen's mother was sleeping in the house. After burying his wife, he returned home and saw his 9-month-old daughter crying. Then Shaheen drowned the child in the canal water and fled with his wife. The day after the incident, Sumaiya's younger sister came home and searched for her sister. At that time, Shaheen told her that Sumaiya had left the house with her daughter. Shaheen fled that night. The next day, Sumaiya's father came home to look for his daughter and granddaughter. He became suspicious when he saw soft soil next to the house. The neighbors called and dug up the ground and recovered the bodies of the daughter and granddaughter.

The Special Superintendent of Police of CID further said that this is a degradation of a society. Although a solution was found through mediation of the rape issue socially, the woman could not escape from the hands of the rapist. He also killed her 9-month-old child.
