Bangladesh has been elected as a member of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the term 2022-2024 as the representative of the Asia region. Bangladesh achieved this membership unanimously at the ongoing 42nd FAO Conference with the participation of representatives of 183 member states. Through this, Bangladesh will lead the oversight of FAO's activities at the policy and executive levels, budget implementation, monitoring of activities under the results-based framework, and the administrative aspects of the organization, including implementation and monitoring of the decisions of the Governing Council.
Bangladesh's membership comes at a time when the 36th Asia-Pacific FAO Regional Conference (APRC) is set to be held in Dhaka from March 8 to 11 next year. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the conference, which will be held in Bangladesh for the first time, and is expected to be attended by ministerial-level representatives from 46 countries.
Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak is leading an eight-member Bangladesh delegation at the ongoing FAO conference on a virtual platform at the FAO headquarters in Rome, and others include Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mr. Md. Mesbahul Islam, Ambassador of the Bangladesh Embassy in Rome and Permanent Representative to the FAO Md. Shamim Ahsan.
