Inauguration of river dredging work of Dhaka-Laxmipur waterway

Dhaka-Lakshmipur Excavation of the 25 km channel of the south side of Meghna River, adjacent to Majuchaudhurirhat of Laxmipur Sadar Upazila in the lower part of Meghna River in the lower part of Meghna River, has started on Saturday (December 12) to make passenger launch movement on waterways and ferries on Bhola-Laxmipur waterways fast and safe.

Once the excavation work is completed, the distance of both Bhola-Laxmipur and Dhaka-Laxmipur waterways will be reduced by about 10 km. Passenger launch can go from Dhaka to Lakshmipur in 6 hours. State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP inaugurated the mentioned 25 km excavation work of Dhaka-Laxmipur waterway in Laxmipur today on Saturday.

The state minister said that the prime minister is our beacon. The country is shining with his light. He is constructing Padma Bridge, Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant, Matarbari Deep Sea Port, Four Lane - Six Lane Highway, Metro Rail, Elevated Expressway. The state minister said these things in his chief guest speech at a gathering on the occasion of the inauguration of the dredging work of the Dhaka-Lakshipur waterway at Majuchaudhurirhat bus terminal in Lakshmipur on Saturday.

BIWTA chairman Commodore Golam Sadek presided over the event, among others former minister and current member of parliament of Laxmipur-3 constituency AKM Shahjahan Kamal, Deputy Commissioner Anjan Chandra Pal, Superintendent of Police Dr. AHM Kamruzzaman, District Awami League President Alhaj Mian Mohammad Golam Farooq Pinku and General Assembly Advocate Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan. The state minister said that the current Awami League government has adopted a master plan to restore 10,000 kilometers of waterways. The State Minister later officially inaugurated the dredging activities in the lower channel of the Meghna in the Chararmani area from Majuchaudhurirhat.

It should be noted that the distance of the waterway from Dhaka to Lakshmipur over Buriganga, Dhaleswari and Meghna (Lower) rivers is 125 km. There is currently no navigability crisis in the Buriganga and Dhaleswari rivers. In Meghna (Lower) river there is navigability problem at some places in the area adjacent to Majuchaudhurirhat in Laxmipur.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will excavate a 25 km waterway in the Meghna (Lower) river channel. Excavation started in December this year and will be completed in December 2022. About 50 crore rupees will be spent on excavation of 31 lakh cubic meters in two years. Excavation work will be completed with contractor company Bangladesh Navy's Khulna Shipyard Limited and BIWTA's own dredgers.
