Rufia Begum, the daughter of a brave freedom fighter, was murdered by her only son, a shop employee, Mehedi Hasan Rabbi, in 2019. The mother has been branded a 'madwoman' for demanding justice for the killers. There are also allegations that the accused are threatening her to withdraw the case after being released on bail.

The mother, who is on the run, has chosen the courthouse to seek justice for her son's murder. On Wednesday, she hung a picture of her son around her neck and demanded justice.

Rufia Begum, daughter of late freedom fighter Abdul Malek of Noarai village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj, said that on July 23, 2019, terrorists hacked and killed her only son Mehedi Hasan Rabbi in public on the orders of Ward 3 Councilor Liaqat Ali of Chhatak Municipality in the Chhatak Cement Factory area. Then on the night of July 26, she (Rufia) filed a murder case naming 17 people. The police have already submitted a charge sheet to the court. Since the accused, including Liaqat Ali, are influential, he is being threatened to withdraw the case. She has filed a written complaint in this incident at various places including Chhatak Police Station and Sylhet DIG office. Tarek Hossain, who was involved in the murder of Rabbi, gave a statement under Section 164 on September 28, 2019.

Rufia Begum also said that the case is pending in court. However, the defendants' lawyers are delaying the date on various pretexts. Taking this opportunity, the accused, who have been released on bail, are constantly threatening her. She is now fleeing the area due to their fear. She has come to the court premises in despair, demanding speedy trial of the accused.

Former Sunamganj district president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), retired principal Chittaranjan Talukder, visited the court area to express solidarity with the mother's lone protest program against the murder of her son.

Chittaranjan Talukder said, "The woman, helpless, has chosen the court premises to demand justice for her son's killers. She has caught our attention by protesting alone. She is lamenting for justice for the murder of her son. We also want justice for the murder of this helpless mother's child."

Human rights leader Faujiara Shammi, who was present at the court premises, said, "We know the pain of the childless woman. We also want the murderers of her son to be brought to justice."

Public Prosecutor Khairul Kabir Romen said, "We are trying to ensure that the childless woman gets justice for the murder of her son. The mother is no longer normal due to the grief of her son. She is seeking speedy justice for her son through various programs. We are working to ensure that she gets the highest possible justice."
