French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped on the street. He was out on a pre-scheduled visit on Tuesday. The footage of him being slapped has already gone viral on social media. It is reported that two people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident of slapping Macron.
It is learned that on Tuesday, during an official visit to the Drôme region of southeastern France, the French president approached the barricade to meet with the crowd. At that time, a young man from the opposite side of the barricade suddenly reached out and slapped the president on the cheek. Immediately, security members quickly removed Macron from there and arrested the young man who slapped him.
International media reported that chants of "Down with Macho" were being chanted at the scene when the president was slapped. However, French politicians have strongly protested the incident.
Immediately after the incident, French Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker told the French National Assembly that in a democracy there can be debate and legitimate differences of opinion, but this should in no way mean violence, verbal and physical attacks.
