How 'Sheikh Jarrah' became a symbol of the Palestinian struggle

Sheikh Jarrah is a small settlement in the ancient city of East Jerusalem in the West Bank. Israeli forces recently evicted eight Palestinian families living there to build a Jewish settlement. Palestinian residents in Sheikh Jarrah staged a resistance movement this week to stop this illegal occupation. The movement later spread throughout Palestine from that settlement. Many Palestinians have called this resistance movement a new uprising against Israel.

The incident began last week when the Israeli military used foul-smelling water cannons to disperse Palestinian resistance in Sheikh Jarrah. The Jewish occupation forces made every effort day and night to drive the Palestinians out of the area. At that time, violent clashes and tensions spread throughout the Old City of Jerusalem.

On Monday, Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched rocket attacks from Gaza targeting Israeli settlements and installations. Israel responded by launching airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Gaza health officials said that nine Palestinians were killed in the attacks that day.যেভাবে ‘শেখ জারাহ’ ফিলিস্তিনি লড়াইয়ের প্রতীক হয়ে উঠলোThe area was named after Sheikh Jarrah, the personal physician of the Muslim ruler Saladin after he conquered Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187.
