The BJP has a majority in the northern districts of West Bengal, India. But after the defeat in the recent state assembly elections, many leaders and workers are leaving the party. In this situation, a BJP MP has demanded the creation of a separate union territory for the northern districts to keep the party strong. BBC Bangla has reported.
The report said that Alipurduar MP John Barla said that he will raise this demand in the Lok Sabha in New Delhi to save the party. Several other BJP MPs from North Bengal have agreed with this demand. However, they also emphatically say that this is not a decision on the part of the party.
At this time, he asked, "Does a Union Territory mean keeping its mouth shut like Kashmir, taking away its rights, and keeping it under surveillance? Whose interests are they trying to serve by dividing Bengal?"
The leader also commented on why such a demand was suddenly made, and it would be wrong to look at the matter this way. He said that no organizational decision has been taken by the party.
Gautam Sarkar, associate editor and political analyst of the daily Uttar Banga Sangbad, said that raising any demand to divide Bengal would hurt the sentiments of the people of the entire state. And the BJP understands that very well. However, they are bringing forward such demands to maintain the organization.
