Regarding the Union Parishad (UP) elections, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said that although the elections were supposed to be held on April 11, it was postponed considering the Corona infection situation. But elections are the democratic right of the people. Therefore, the election date has been rescheduled. Whatever the weather, environmental conditions, the elections will be held on the scheduled time. The CEC said this as the chief guest in a law and order meeting with the concerned officials on the occasion of the UP elections at the Barisal Circuit House auditorium on Saturday afternoon.
CEC Nurul Huda said that although elections have been postponed in various areas at the request of the Health Ministry, elections will be held in 208 local government institutions in areas where the coronavirus infection is low, including Barisal, on June 21. Who belongs to which party or opinion, will not be considered in the election process. Instructions have been given to take strict action against those who violate the code of conduct. He added, 'Our job is to conduct a fair election by giving equal opportunities to everyone. Magistrates and law enforcement officers will be deployed on the day of the election. They will perform their duties on the day of the election with a completely impartial perspective without any bias.'
The meeting, chaired by Barisal Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin, was attended by Divisional Commissioner Md. Saiful Hasan, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Shahabuddin Khan, Range DIG S M Akhtaruzzaman, Joint Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Farhad Ahmed Khan, Barisal Superintendent of Police Md. Maruf Hossain, Barisal Regional Election Officer Md. Alauddin, among others.
According to sources from the Divisional Election Office, voting for 173 UP elections in 33 upazilas in Barisal division will be held on June 21. Of these, voting will be held in 50 unions in 9 upazilas, excluding Agailjhara upazila of Barisal district.
