The first case was filed in Gulshan Police Station of the capital on December 19, 2002 regarding the recovery of the deadly drug Yaba. But even after 19 years, the case was not resolved. However, the lawyer for the state, Assistant Public Prosecutor Subal Chandra Sheel, hopes that the case will be settled once the 'lockdown' is lifted. The accused will be punished.
The case is pending in the Environment Court. The accused in this case, Safiqul Islam alias Jewel, his three accomplices, Somnath, Moshfiq and Emran, are all on bail.
It is known that the first Yaba came to Bangladesh in 1997. In 2002, a team of the Directorate of Narcotics Control arrested Safiqul Islam Jewel, son of a wealthy family, along with Yaba from Niketan area of Gulshan in the capital. In this incident, Directorate Dhaka Metro sub-region inspector Enamul filed a case at Gulshan Police Station as the plaintiff. Inspector Helal Uddin Bhuiyan of the Directorate was given the responsibility of investigating the case. Recently he was transferred from Dhaka and working in Chittagong.
Regarding the case, he said, I have seriously investigated this sensational case. The charges against the four drug dealers were initially proved. I filed a charge sheet against the accused in the court in 2003. I also testified in court as an investigation officer.
About the incident, Helal Uddin said that on the evening of December 19, 2002, a team of the Narcotics Control Directorate searched the third floor west side flat of house number 129 of A block in Niketan, Gulshan. Drug dealer Safiqul Islam alias Jewel was arrested from there. Various types of drugs including heroin, drug use equipment, mobile phones, a private car used in drug trade, Tk 2 lakh 39 thousand 800 and porno CDs were seized. Among them were 120 narcotic tablets, with W Y written on them (yaba). Even the officials who participated in the operation did not know that the name of this tablet was Yaba.
He said that accused Sofiqul was remanded and questioned. During interrogation, Safiqul revealed the names of his three accomplices. Later, on the information given by Safiqul, a house of Banshri was raided and they were arrested. At this time, 402 pieces of Yaba tablets and various drugs were seized from them.
