In a meeting with the three parties in the suddenly changing political situation, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has once again raised the issue of holding elections between December and June, said Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
The press secretary told reporters around 10:15 pm after the chief advisor's separate meetings with BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) on Saturday. He said the meetings were held in a very cordial atmosphere. The main topics of discussion were elections, reforms and the trial process of the July massacre. All political parties have presented their respective positions. They have also expressed their unwavering support for the chief advisor. Some parties have said that the entire Bangladesh has confidence in the leadership of the chief advisor. Under his leadership, free and fair elections should be held in Bangladesh.
Shafiqul Alam said, BNP has asked for elections by December. Jamaat believes that it may take December to complete the reform process. Jamaat has supported the timeline given by Professor Yunus between December and June. NCPO has also supported it. NCP and Jamaat believe that the environment required for free elections is not in the Election Commission. They have emphasized that a level playing field should be ensured through reforms in the commission.
Regarding the trial process, the chief advisor said that the trial process of the July massacre will begin this month. He assured everyone that the trial process will be completed quickly in accordance with the law. In response to a question regarding the ongoing political crisis, the press secretary said, "We do not know what happened in the crisis. Discussions have been held with the political parties in a very cordial manner."
The press secretary said that National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz told the meeting that the reform process will be completed by July 20 and the July Charter will be adopted. Work is underway on the July declaration and this work will be completed very soon.
