Cyclone Sitrang: 19 districts of the country at risk

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman said that the Meteorological Department is predicting that Cyclone Sitrang could hit 19 coastal districts of the country simultaneously. He said, "The current forecast is that all 19 (coastal) districts are at risk. The area it will hit is much larger than the cyclones that have occurred in the last three years."

The State Minister made this information at a press conference organized on the issue of Cyclone Sitrang at the Secretariat today, Sunday (October 23).

Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman said, 'According to the latest report, its location is 88.5 longitude and 16 latitude. The forecast says that it may turn directly northeast after reaching the junction of 87 degrees longitude and 17 degrees latitude. If it does turn northeast, then the trajectory shown can hit all (19) districts of the coast from Cox's Bazar to Satkhira.'

The Meteorological Department said that due to the extension of the deep depression and the influence of the large difference in air pressure, the coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar and their low-lying areas of the offshore islands and chars may be flooded by wind-driven tidal surges of 03-05 feet higher than the normal tide.
