Barisal University (BUB) students have been accused of beating up a traffic sergeant and a constable after they filed a case against them for riding a motorcycle without documents. Later, they blocked the Barisal-Kuakata highway adjacent to the university. The three students who beat them up in this incident have been arrested and taken to Kotwali Police Station.
The incident took place around 9:30 pm on Tuesday in front of the Shebachim (Centre) of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College on Band Road in Barisal city.
The three arrested students are Sharif, Alvir and Sohag. They are activists of the university's Chhatra League.
Barisal Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Md. Fazlur Rahman said that the three detained students were passing in front of Shebachim Hospital on a motorcycle without documents at around 9 pm. Sergeant Monirul Islam on duty there seized the motorcycle and filed a case. Enraged by this, they beat up Sergeant Monirul and the constable. Later, additional police went to rescue them and the three attackers were arrested.
Meanwhile, classmates blocked the Barisal-Kuakata highway around 9:45 pm following news of the student's arrest.
Bandar Police Station OC Abdur Rahman Mukul said arrangements were made to persuade the students to move off the road. Traffic flow returned to normal after the students moved off the road around 10:15 pm.
Barisal University Proctor Dr. Khorshed Alam said at 10:45 pm that arrangements have been made to persuade the students to move them off the road. A representative is going to the Kotwali police station to resolve the issue of the detained students.
