Mali's interim government reshuffled its cabinet on Monday (May 24). On that day, the army arrested the country's president, prime minister and defense minister. This is the second such incident in the country after just 9 months.
According to the news agency Reuters, Mali's President Bah N'Dao, Prime Minister Mokhtar Ouane and Defense Minister Sulaiman Dokure were detained and taken to a military base near the capital Bamako.
Since the military coup, President Bah Ndao and Prime Minister Moktar Uane have been in charge of an 18-month interim government. At the same time, he was trying to restore civilian rule in the country.
On Monday, the Prime Minister announced the reshuffle of the interim government's cabinet. At least two army officers were dropped from the cabinet.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has asked for the speedy release of the country's president and prime minister, who are imprisoned by the army.
Asami Gaita, the leader of the military coup, is serving as the vice president of Mali's interim government. Besides, the detained Prime Minister Bah Nda is also a former military officer.
In this situation, instability may increase in the West African country, experts said. For some time in Mali, violent Islamist groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State have controlled large swaths of the desert north.
