BNP is not going to Laxmipur by-election

Kazi Shahidul Islam, who lost his position as a member of Parliament after being sentenced abroad, is in the constituency of Papul By-elections BNP will not participate. A press release of BNP said on Sunday that this decision was taken at the meeting of the party's standing committee. It is said there that the Standing Committee of BNP has decided not to field a party candidate in the by-election of the Jatiya Sangsad in Lakshmipur-2 seat.

"Since the Election Commission has shown incompetence in conducting all the elections and the government is brazenly interfering illegally in all the elections, it has been decided to refrain from participating in all these elections for the time being."

Kazi Shahid Islam Papul, a member of the Laxmipur-2 constituency in the 11th National Assembly, was arrested in Kuwait last year. On January 28, he was sentenced to four years in prison in the case of money and human trafficking, and his MP post was declared vacant in the country. Elections will be held here on April 11. After keeping polling date on April 11, the EC announced the schedule of by-elections for Laxmipur-2 constituencies comprising parts of Raipur and Sadar upazilas.

The ruling Awami League has already nominated Advocate Nooruddin Chowdhury Nayan, General Secretary of Laxmipur District Awami League in the by-election of that seat. On the other hand, it was decided not to go to the polls in the virtual meeting of the party's standing committee last Saturday night under the chairmanship of BNP acting chairman Tariq Rahman.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Member Khandkar Mosharraf Hossain, Zamiruddin Sarkar, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku were present in that meeting.

The decision of that meeting was informed to the media by sending a press release signed by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP on Sunday night. In the meeting of the standing committee, everyone was requested to pray for the speedy recovery of BNP leader Maudud Ahmad, who is undergoing treatment in Singapore, and Selima Rahman, who is admitted to a hospital in Dhaka due to coronavirus.
