Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Police Station of Noakhali Muhammad Haroon or Rashid Chowdhury has been withdrawn and attached to the office of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Chittagong Range. This order was given from Chittagong Range DIG office on Tuesday afternoon.
A video of a woman (37) being stripped and tortured in Eklashpur Union of the upazila was spread on social media on October 4. When the incident of torture came to light in the beginning of last September, there was a storm of criticism across the country.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Noakhali. Alamgir Hossain confirmed the withdrawal of the OC on Tuesday afternoon. However, the SP refused to explain the exact reason for the withdrawal of the OC. He said that OC Harun or Rashid Chowdhury has been withdrawn from the police station and attached to the range office. The DIG of Chittagong Range himself gave this order on Tuesday afternoon.
Two committees of the administration to investigate the incident
Meanwhile, two separate investigation committees formed by the district administration and the police administration are working to investigate the incident of torture of the woman under discussion.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Khaled Ibn Malek called the three-member committee formed by the police administration visited Begumganj police station on Tuesday for investigation. At this time, they spoke with various police officers including the outgoing OC of the police station Harun Aur Rashid Chowdhury. The other two members of this committee formed on Monday are Assistant Superintendent of Police of Hatia Circle Golam Farooq and Inspector (Crime) HM Samchuddin of the office of the Superintendent of Police.
When asked about the investigation, a member of the committee, on condition of anonymity, told Prothom Alo that the investigation of the district police is going on to find out whether there was negligence on the part of the local police station in the incident that was discussed all over the country.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Khorshed Alam Khan said on Tuesday afternoon that an investigation committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Israt Sadmin of the district administration has been formed after the incident. Begumganj upazila executive officer and an executive magistrate are members of the committee.
The Deputy Commissioner said that this committee was formed the day after the incident came to light. The inquiry committee has been directed to submit its report within 15 working days. The investigation committee is looking into why the incident happened, why the public representatives or local people did not inform the administration after the incident.
