Sitakunda on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway is a safe route for heroin smugglers. Seven kg of heroin has been recovered from this area in the last three months. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered these heroin by raiding the passenger bus.
However, no one was arrested in connection with the recovery of heroin on Thursday. The BGB officials said that some people including the bus driver and helper are being interrogated.
BGB stopped a bus named 'Shyamoli NR Paribahan' at BMA Gate area of Sitakunda around 10 am on Thursday. At this time, the bus was searched by trained dogs. One kilogram of 100 grams of heroin was recovered. BGB officials said that the price of the recovered heroin is estimated at Tk 22 lakh.
On July 9, a bus called 'Hanif Paribahan' was searched by a dog in the area near Mikko Petrol Pump in Bhatiari Union of Sitakunda Upazila and one kg and 400 grams of heroin were recovered. On the same day, heroin worth Tk 2 crore was recovered by searching the bus called 'Super Soni' in Tentultala area of the upazila. In the same week, the BGB team recovered heroin worth Tk 1 crore from Bhatiari Dakshin Bazar area of the upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Shahed Minhaj Siddiqui, commander of BGB-8 of Chittagong region, said that they believe that there is a link with heroin smuggling on Thursday with the recovered heroin.
